Volusia County Schools Leaders Visit St. Johns County to Explore Educational Programs and Share Best Practices

DELAND – On Wednesday, Jan. 8, leaders from Volusia County Schools (VCS) visited the St. Johns County School District to explore innovative programs that support student success. The visit included tours of their pre-K program, St. Johns Technical High School, First Coast Technical College, and the Life Work Transition Program.

Each program highlighted unique approaches to preparing students for academic achievement, career readiness and independent living. Volusia County administrators gained valuable insights into program structure, implementation and community partnerships that support a diverse student population.

Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in advancing educational opportunities.

“Partnering with nearby districts allows us to learn from one another and grow together,” Balgobin said. “By exploring programs like these, we can identify innovative strategies to provide all of our students with high-quality education and the skills needed to succeed in school, work and life.”

Key highlights from the visit included:

  • Pre-K Program: A focus on early learning strategies that set the foundation for lifelong success.
  • St. Johns Technical High School: Career-focused pathways providing students with hands-on learning experiences and industry certifications.
  • First Coast Technical College: Advanced technical training in fields such as healthcare, culinary arts and construction.
  • Life Work Transition Program: Comprehensive support for students with disabilities, including life skills training, workplace readiness and community engagement.

This visit reflects Volusia County Schools’ commitment to exploring innovative approaches that address the diverse needs of its students. The insights gained will inform the district’s ongoing efforts to expand its own programs and opportunities for students of all ages and abilities.
