Volusia County Schools launches
Great People Great Deeds campaign

DELAND – Volusia County Schools kicked off a new initiative on Friday called Great People Great Deeds, which recognizes VCS educators and support staff who go above and beyond their work duties to impact the greater community.

Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin and her team hit the road on Friday to surprise one instructional and one non-instructional employee with the honors:

  • Deborah Treur, intermediate teacher, Beachside Elementary
  • Gregg Bastian, guardian, Spruce Creek Elementary
Treur goes “above and beyond” for her students every day, tutoring before and after school as well as tutoring off campus voluntarily, her nominator, Principal Barbara Bruner, wrote.

“Her heart is always for our students, and her dedication is shown by her tireless efforts for her students and Beachside,” Bruner wrote.

Beyond the classroom, Treur recently took it upon herself to help a student’s family whose home flooded. Treur found free and low-cost furniture and other items the family needed, which she delivered to their home.

Bastian, a retired Port Orange firefighter, is recognized for a heroic act he performed in December, in addition to fulfilling his responsibilities as a guardian at Spruce Creek Elementary.

On Christmas morning, Bastian noticed smoke coming from a neighbor’s home. He alerted the neighbor and evacuated the family, then put out the fire with a garden hose before the fire department arrived.

“As I always say, Mr. B. has an uncanny ability to always be in the right place at the right time.” his nominator, Principal Andrea Hall, wrote. “We are so grateful that he is our guardian, and we are extremely proud of him!"

The awards will be bestowed monthly and come with a “Great People Great Deeds” shirt, as well as the parking spot of their choice at their school, designated by a sign recognizing their impact to VCS and the community.

“In addition to having amazing educators and support staff, Volusia County Schools has many employees that are outstanding citizens going the extra mile to better their communities and support their neighbors,” Dr. Balgobin said. “We’re excited to recognize these great humans who are making not only their schools a wonderful place but also making the world a better place.”

February’s Great People Great Deeds recognitions were sponsored by Leonard’s.
