Bargaining Update: District Reaffirms Compensation Offer

Volusia County Schools came to the bargaining table Wednesday, again prepared to discuss meaningful compensation and retaining and attracting high-quality employees.

After reiterating and explaining the district’s fund balance and the associated legal requirements for specific portions, Volusia United Educators asked the district, which has already made multiple budget cuts to provide their offer of $6 million, to revisit the assigned fund balance to identify another $1.5 million.

The approximately $2.7 million that remains above the required reserve level, after accounting for nonspendable, restricted, and assigned funds, and the School Board’s required minimum reserve, is already included in the $6 million in recurring funding for employee raises, supplements, longevity pay, and retention incentives.

Additionally, the district has proposed 10 consecutive workdays of paid parental leave, which carries an estimated cost of $500,000.

Before full collective bargaining began, the district and VUE tentatively agreed on how to allocate Teacher Salary Increase Allocation (TSIA) funding, which required an additional $611,111 from the district's general fund.

The next session will be held Tuesday, Sept. 22.
