VCS Students ‘Shine’ with New 529 Scholarships
DELAND – It’s time to shine for three outstanding Volusia County Schools students!
VCS partnered with Florida Prepaid to create a Time to Shine 529 Scholarship this spring, and the first scholarships have been awarded. The recipients are:
- Elementary: Roger Montero, 5th-grader at McInnis Elementary – $1,000
- Middle: London Wilkey, 8th-grader at Creekside Middle – $1,000
- High: Lilly Harvey, 12th-grader at New Smyrna Beach High – $2,000
Students from across Volusia County Schools were nominated by their schools, and the scholarship winners were selected by a district committee.
The money awarded is being deposited into a Florida Prepaid 529 Savings Plan, which is an investment account that provides a flexible and tax-free way to save for college expenses. The name “529” comes from Section 529 of the federal tax code, which authorizes states to offer the plans.
Florida Prepaid offers two ways for families to save for college – the investment account option and a prepaid plan that allows families to make payments to prepay for tuition and other expenses.
Florida Prepaid funded the Time to Shine 529 Scholarships in exchange for VCS’ assistance in marketing the savings options this spring.
