VCS Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Volusia County Schools, the state of Florida and the United States observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of those whose heritage is from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Here at VCS, schools are celebrating and learning through art, music, dance, literature, history, world languages and special projects. Many schools have decorated bulletin boards and classroom doors to share Hispanic culture, traditions, and history.

VCS invites all VCS students to participate in the annual Art & Essay Contest!

In an essay of 250-500 words, in English, Spanish or French, respond to the following prompt: How has Volusia County’s Hispanic heritage enriched your life?

Provide a visual representation of our local Hispanic Heritage. Any 2-D or 3-D media will be accepted. An artist statement is required.

Students can submit their artwork and/or essay to any World Languages teacher at their school by Thursday, September 30. Dr. Grace Kellermeier, VCS Coordinator of World Languages, Electives and Special Programs, will award $50 cash to the winning artist and the winning author.

Volusia County is blessed to have a rich and diverse Hispanic community, including 14,470 VCS students who are Hispanic and/or Latino. (“Latino” refers to people whose heritage is from Latin-America, which includes Mexico, the Caribbean and Brazil. “Hispanic” refers to people whose heritage is from Spanish-speaking countries, which includes Spain. So, not all Hispanics are Latino, and not all Latinos are Hispanic!)
