Clarification on Returning to Work

Thank you for your questions regarding the previous release to all employees. Below is important clarifying information:

  • Instructional Staff - All members covered by the instructional bargaining unit ARE NOT to report to work until Friday, September 6, 2019. This includes Certified School Counselors, Professional Learning Leaders (PLLs), Digital Learning Teacher Leaders (DLTLs), Teachers on Assignment (TOAs), Psychologists, Speech Clinicians, Social Workers, District Placement Specialists, Resource Teachers, Academic Coaches, Teachers, Peer Assistance and Review (PAR) Teachers and all other individuals covered under the VUE contract. Again, instructional unit personnel ARE NOT to report to work Thursday, September 5, but instead return to work on Friday, September 6.
  • Office Specialists - ALL Office Specialists (District and School-based) ARE TO REPORT TO WORK, whether 9, 10, 11 or 12 month staff*
  • Extended Day staff includes Before-The-Bell staff and DO NOT report to work until Friday, September 6, 2019.
  • Nurses, Clinic Assistants, Campus Advisors, Deaf Interpreters, School Guardians, Paraprofessionals, Bus Operators, Bus Attendants, School Way Café staff DO NOT report to work until Friday, September 6, 2019. **
  • Only those scheduled to work should be on school campuses tomorrow.
  • Friday is a regular school/work day for students as well as all staff.

Note:

* If student make-up days are scheduled in the future, compensation for will be determined at that time, in accordance with bargaining contracts and past practice.

** Those designated as essential personnel report to work as scheduled on Thursday, September 5, 2019.

Important Communication Regarding Reporting to Work

 

Thursday, September 5, 2019:

  • All district staff will report to work on Thursday.*

  • All school-based non-instructional staff will report to work on Thursday.
  • Designated “essential personnel” of all types will work on Thursday.
  • ABM is starting to work today, Wednesday, and will work Thursday, starting at 10 AM.

*Detail Notes: All employees will be paid as normal this week, and some will qualify for working extra time related to shelter coverage and support (see Policy 502 and collective bargaining contracts). Time sheets were maintained at the shelters and support locations. Thursday and Friday will be considered regular duty days.

Personnel who do not report to work on Thursday, September 5:

  • Teachers including TOAs
  • Paraprofessionals
  • Nurses and Health Support Techs (clinic support)
  • Deaf Interpreters
  • Extended day employees
  • Campus Advisors
  • Bus Operators and Attendants (unless scheduled as essential designated personnel)
  • School Way Café staff (unless scheduled as essential designated personnel)
  • School Guardians

SHELTER UPDATE!

At this time some shelters are being consolidated. The following shelters are now closed:

  • Pine Ridge High School
  • Pride Elementary School
  • River Springs Middle School
  • University High School

This is subject to change based on updated Hurricane Dorian storm information.

  • Special Needs Shelter - Assists evacuees with disabilities or functional medical needs. This is a Pet Friendly shelter for Special Needs persons only. Evacuees and their service animals will remain in the same location.

    • Creekside Middle, 6801 Airport Rd., Port Orange
    • Freedom Elementary, 1395 S. Blue Lake Ave., DeLand
    • Galaxy Middle, 2400 Eustace Ave., Deltona

  • Pet Friendly - People and pets are housed in separate locations at the shelter

Schools are closed Tuesday (Sept. 3) , Wednesday (Sept. 4) and Thursday (Sept. 5). All shelters will open Monday, September 2, 2019 at 10am. All school related activities on or off campus are cancelled through Thursday.

Shelters are now scheduled to open on Monday based on the most recent storm tracking update.

At this time shelter openings are forecasted to open between noon on Sunday & noon on Monday, September 2, 2019. This is subject to change based on updated Hurricane Dorian storm information.

Here are some important updates:

At this time shelter openings are scheduled to begin at noon on Sunday, September 1, 2019. This is subject to change based on updated Hurricane Dorian storm information.

The names of specific shelter locations will be posted on Saturday afternoon, August 31, 2019.

All schools and district offices are closed on Tuesday, September 3, 2019. If any additional school closings are necessary, they will be announced Monday afternoon September 2, 2019.

Volusia County Schools is closely monitoring Hurricane Dorian with our Emergency Management partners. We will continue to monitor this hurricane and provide updates daily.

Here are some important updates:

  • Friday, August 30, 2019 is a normal school day including scheduled athletic competitions and extended day programs.
  • However, all other school activities that take place on our campuses must be completed by 6pm Friday so shelter preparations can be made. (Football games will proceed as scheduled Friday night)
  • All activities are cancelled for Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
  • SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2019.
  • Volusia County Schools plans on opening shelters on Saturday morning starting at 10am. Our pet friendly, special needs and general shelter locations will be on our district website and social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram released on Friday.
