DeLand - The School District of Volusia County’s spelling bee took place on Tuesday, February 4, at Atlantic High School. After 28 rounds, Kate Thompson, an eighth grader at Creekside Middle, won after correctly spelling the word: mancala. Congratulations to Kate and runner-up Beatrice “Trixie” Meckley, an eighth grader at Southwestern Middle, who will represent Volusia in the Orlando Sentinel Regional Bee on March 18.
Thirty-nine elementary and middle schools in Volusia, including several private and charter schools, registered as participating Scripps National Bee schools and held school-level spelling bees in January.
The winner and runner up from the Orlando Bee will be invited to participate in Scripps National Bee week which runs from May 24-29 in Maryland where one speller from more than 11 million initial school bee participants will become the national champion.
