Kindergartners at Orange City Elementary are getting a complimentary healthy breakfast right in their classrooms thanks to a new School Way Café initiative.
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and skipping it has both short and long- term effects” says School Way Café Assistant Director Valerie Hansen. She says, “It can make a child restless, tired and inattentive. It can also contribute to tardiness, poor attendance and overall lower grade performance. By serving Breakfast in the Classroom everyone stands to benefit. Students are ensured a nutritious breakfast needed to think clearly, concentrate on learning, and perform better in class. Since the allotted time will also be used to take attendance or give announcements, no class time is lost.”
BIC at Orange City Elementary started as a pilot on August 12, 2019 with four kindergarten classes; a fifth class was added in September.
School Way Café has partnered with No Kid Hungry and the Dairy Council of Florida to ensure a successful pilot with hopes of expanding to other grade levels, as well as adding schools to participate in the program.
