Fentanyl Awareness

What is Fentanyl?

  • A synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.
  • #1 cause of death in Americans ages 18–45.
  • Found in street drugs such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana.
  • Mixed into fake prescription pills (Percocet, OxyContin, Xanax, Adderall) that may actually contain methamphetamine and fentanyl.
  • Just three grains of salt worth of fentanyl can kill.

Signs of an Overdose

Everyone in Volusia County Schools should know the warning signs of fentanyl overdose:

  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Falling asleep or unconsciousness
  • Slow, weak, or no breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Cold or clammy skin
  • Discolored lips or nails
  • Limp body

What To Do If Someone Overdoses

  1. Call 911 immediately.
  2. Administer naloxone (Narcan) if available.
  3. Lay the person on their side to prevent choking.
  4. Try to keep them awake and breathing until help arrives.
