What is Fentanyl?
- A synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.
- #1 cause of death in Americans ages 18–45.
- Found in street drugs such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana.
- Mixed into fake prescription pills (Percocet, OxyContin, Xanax, Adderall) that may actually contain methamphetamine and fentanyl.
- Just three grains of salt worth of fentanyl can kill.
Signs of an Overdose
Everyone in Volusia County Schools should know the warning signs of fentanyl overdose:
- Pinpoint pupils
- Falling asleep or unconsciousness
- Slow, weak, or no breathing
- Choking or gurgling sounds
- Cold or clammy skin
- Discolored lips or nails
- Limp body
What To Do If Someone Overdoses
- Call 911 immediately.
- Administer naloxone (Narcan) if available.
- Lay the person on their side to prevent choking.
- Try to keep them awake and breathing until help arrives.

- Reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.
- Available in many county health departments statewide.
