Half-Cent Sales Tax
The half-cent sales tax is a half-penny tax on the sale of some goods and services across Volusia County that directly supports education. The first half-penny sales tax was approved by Volusia County voters on October 9, 2001. The sales tax was extended for another 15 years on August 26, 2014, from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2031.
- Through 2031, our focus is on services and capital improvements that are vital to our students, like enhanced security measures, school renovations, technological upgrades, school expansions, and even new school construction. Every school, student, and staff member benefits from this funding and essential investment in education across Volusia County!
- For perspective, a half-cent sales tax adds just 50 cents to a $100 purchase, but every half-penny from tourists and residents adds up to a whole investment in our students.
- The half-cent sales tax can only be used for capital projects including facilities maintenance, renovations, and construction, as well as security and technology. Sales tax revenue cannot be spent on general operating expenses such as salaries or instructional material.
How do I know the money will be spent as stated?
The use of the half-cent sales tax is overseen by a Project Oversight Committee, made up of dedicated community members who do not work for the school district but help ensure the funds are used in areas where they will make the most impact.
