How to become a Teacher
To become a Teacher for Volusia County Schools, you'll need to have a bachelor's degree or higher that falls into one of the categories listed below, and receive certification from the Florida Department of Education.

Florida Applicants should request that your college or university send official transcripts to the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE).
Out-of-State Applicants should:
- Request that your college or university send official transcripts to the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). Then submit a copy of your valid, standard, out-of-state certificate to the FLDOE and Volusia County School Board /Human Resource Services-Certification Office. (Write your social security number on each copy.)
- Submit a copy of your valid, standard, out-of-state certificate to the FLDOE.
- Upload a copy of your valid, standard, out-of-state certificate to Volusia County Schools. Certificates should be uploaded to VCS via the Volusia County Schools Standard Application page.
Note: After the FLDOE evaluates your application, they will notify you of any additional certification requirements in a letter titled Official Statement of Status of Eligibility.
Register for a Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE) or Florida Educator Leadership Exam (FELE)?
Visit https://www.fl.nesinc.com/ and register for the necessary exam(s) needed to be eligible for Florida certification and employment with Volusia County Schools.
- SAEs are exams used to assess the competencies of prospective teachers according to Florida’s Standards.
- There are 42 different types of subject area examinations.
- Passing the appropriate FTCE exam is considered one part of the requirements for becoming a licensed teacher in Florida.
Note to Provisional Substitutes: Passing the subject area exam allows you to be hired/upgraded as a full-salaried teacher, should all other requirements be met. Please know that this exam is the first one we recommend passing (rather than the General Knowledge or Professional Ed Tests) if you have not been deemed eligible by the FDOE to receive a certificate and/or do not have an education background that aligns with the field you are trying to teach. Documentation of you passing this exam will be used to determine if you are eligible to be hired as a full-salaried teacher.
General Knowledge Test (GKT)

The GK is a basic skills test.
-
It consists of 4 subtests: Essay, English Language Arts, Math, and Reading.
Professional Education Test (PET)
This test assesses pedagogy and professional teaching practices.
Florida Educator Leadership Exam (FELE)
This test is required for the certification of school-based administrators.
Certification Requirements
Professional Certification Requirements
The Florida Professional Certificate is valid for five school years (July 1 - June 30) and must be renewed every five years. The Professional Certificate is issued to an applicant who meets all of the following:
- Completes both a District and Florida State Certification application.
- Holds a bachelor's or higher degree from an acceptable US institution, or the equivalent degree from a foreign institution;
- Earns a 2.5 GPA in the subject area of initial certification;
- District submits fingerprints processed by FDLE and the FBI (including clearance from the Bureau of Educator Standards if required);
- Satisfies professional preparation (education courses);
- Demonstrates professional education competence (VCS TIPS Program);
- Submits passing scores on the following Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE):
- Basic skills knowledge
- Professional education knowledge
- Subject knowledge in each area shown on the certificate
For experienced teachers with non-Florida certificates, a Professional Certificate may be obtained by documenting the following:
- Hold a valid standard teaching certificate from another state;
- Apply for Florida certification in the subject(s) shown on the out of state certificate.
Temporary Certification Requirements
Florida Statute provides an avenue for an individual to be issued a teaching certificate while requirements are completed for the Professional Certificate. The Temporary Certificate is valid for three school years (July 1 - June 30) and is nonrenewable.
Although an applicant's eligibility for a certificate has been approved, the certificate will not be issued until an applicant is hired as a full time teacher. The district certification contact will automatically request the issuance of a certificate when hired in Volusia County. It is issued to an individual who meets the following requirements:
- Completes both a District and Florida State Certification Application.
- Holds an acceptable bachelor's or higher degree.
- Meets subject area requirements by a degree major OR a 2.5 GPA in a course evaluation subject area OR a passing score earned on the appropriate Florida Subject Area Exam, that is no more that 10 years old except in the following areas:
- Guidance and Counseling
- Educational Leadership
- Reading
- School Psychologist
- Speech-Language Impaired
The Volusia County School District will submit fingerprints processed by FDLE and the FBI based upon employment in a Florida public or acceptable nonpublic school. Once the temporary certificate has been issued, the requirements for the professional certificate must be completed within three years. The only exception is completion of the general knowledge exam which must be completed within one year of the first date of assignment.
How to become a School Counselor
To become a School Counselor in Florida public schools, you'll need to meet the following requirements:

A master’s or higher degree with a graduate major in guidance and counseling or school counseling. For more information: School Counseling (Grade PK-12)

Hold a valid Florida Educator Certificate in School Counseling (PK – 12)

Demonstrates the ability to design, implement, analyze, and document outcomes of a comprehensive school counseling program based on national and state standards.

Demonstrates the ability to work with diverse groups.

Demonstrates knowledge of technology and software applications appropriate to job responsibilities.

How to become a School Psychologist
To become a School Psychologist in Florida public schools, you'll need to meet the following requirements:

How to become a Substitute Teacher
To become a Substitute Teacher for Volusia County Schools, you'll need to meet the following requirements:

Substitute teachers new to Volusia County Schools require Volusia County Schools training. By applying, you are tentatively applying for this STAR training course. The STAR course is included in the orientation.
Once you have applied for the Substitute Teacher Vacancy, you must fulfill the following requirements to be eligible to begin subbing in Volusia County Schools.
- Complete screenings required by all Volusia County School employees. (An email authorization to complete fingerprint and drug screenings will be sent to you once you have completed your work history and references in your application.)
- Complete Orientation and STAR training. (An email authorization to complete your orientation and STAR training will be sent to you once all screenings have been received by Volusia County Schools and cleared. All hiring paperwork will be completed at your scheduled orientation.)

How to become a Paraprofessional
To become a Paraprofessional for Volusia County Schools, you'll need the following:

High School diploma or GED required and one of the following:

Associates (A.A. or A.S.) degree or higher or
-
At least 2 years (48 hours) at a higher education institution or
-
Passing grade on the Para Pro Assessment.

Successful completion of the VCS substitute teacher training course (STAR) within one (1) year of the date of hire
- Knowledge and ability to understand child development concepts
- Ability to treat students and parents/ families with respect
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding students and student records as stated in the Family Right to Privacy Act (FRPA)

How to become a Bus Driver or Bus Attendant
Student Transportation Services is currently seeking excellent candidates for School Bus Operator and Attendant positions.
To become a Bus Driver for Volusia County Schools, you'll need to meet several requirements, including having a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a passenger and school bus endorsement. The process also involves training and testing. PAID training is provided!

How to become a Custodian
To become a Custodian for Volusia County Schools, you'll need to meet the following requirements:

- Licensure as a practical nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code
- Two (2) years pediatric, public health, or school health experience
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Current CPR and first aid certification
