Teaching

What is needed for a certified teaching position?

Substitute
Interested in a Substitute Position?

Volusia County Schools is currently accepting substitute teacher applications for the upcoming school year. Once your online application is complete, click on the Jobs Tab and apply for the substitute teacher vacancy.
We are also accepting substitute support applications. Once your online application is complete, click on the Careers link, found in the top left corner of the website, and apply for the substitute support vacancy.
Substitute Teachers
- Complete the online portion of the employment application.
- Apply for the substitute teacher vacancy located in the Careers link, found in the top left corner of the website,.
- You must have a minimum of a High School diploma or GED.
- This position requires completed screenings. You will be notified by email as to when to complete them.
- Substitute teachers are required to complete the Volusia County School District training program. If you have a teaching certificate, the training may be reduced. You will receive confirmation of your enrollment in the STAR training by email when the application process is complete.
Substitute Support
- Complete the online portion of the employment application.
- Apply for the substitute support vacancy located in the Careers link, found in the top left corner of the website,.
- These positions require completed screenings. You will be notified by email as to when to complete them.
- Some positions may require additional training.

Rate of Pay
You may be able to receive a higher rate of pay. Please submit an official transcript in the sealed envelope from your institution with college credits and/or an advanced degree for review.

Requirements for All Non-Certified (Support) Positions
- Complete the online employment application.
- Follow the instructions on the Application Submission Form.
- You will be authorized for fingerprinting and substance screening after Human Resources receives a recommendation for hire.
Requirements for Applicants Without a High School Diploma or GED
Support applicants who have not earned a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) are required to successfully pass the TABE level "M" literacy assessment before beginning employment. Applicants successfully completing the assessment will become eligible to apply for the following positions:

*There is also a substitute training requirement for the above mentioned positions.
All other positions require a high school diploma or GED from an accredited school. The TABE level "M" content is not equivalent to that of GED examinations. For job requirement information, refer to the required qualifications listed on the vacancy advertisement.

Requirements for Office Specialist Positions
- Pass the keyboarding test with a minimum of 35 correct words per minute.
- Pass the clerical literacy assessment, Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) Level D. If you have submitted an official sealed transcript of an associate degree or higher, this requirement may be waived. If your transcript was received from an out of country school, please contact our Certification office about translation of these transcripts at (386) 734-7190 extension 20182.

Requirements for Paraprofessional Positions
Paraprofessional applicants must hold a high school diploma or general education diploma (GED) and ONE of the following:
- Holds an Associate's (or higher) degree; or
- Completed at least two years of student at an institution of higher education (48 credit hours); or
- Received a passing score on the ParaPro Assessment

Paraprofessional will be required to attend the Volusia County Schools substitute teacher training one day course within one (1) year of employment.
Child Development Associate (CDA)
CDAs are preferred for the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) paraprofessionals. They are also used for an additional $.20 per hour for any paraprofessional position. The Department of Children and Families can review your education and/or experience for a possible CDA. The Staff Credential Verification Application is used to validate education and experience for licensing compliance.
